  1. Our team has developed a "Book of the Year Convention" that utilizes literature and combines use of persuasive writing. Our end goal of the instruction is for students to understand how math, writing, and reading interconnect. We have differentiated instruction by creating a menu of items that can be used as an intervention to assist remedial learners and have offered something similar for higher students. In addition, students will be reading on their reading level, thus allowing for kids to work below their frustration level in reading.

Students will be using cameras and computers to create their book advertisements. They will be using a variety of applications and programs. Among these are excel spreadsheets, word, blogger, microsoft publish, and various internet sites.

Our assessment strategies involve using a rubric for a formative assessment for participation and a summative rubric for final product grading. Students will have a copy of the rubric and have access to samples of student work. Moreover, they will be using a checklist and goal sheet to make sure they are where they are supposed to be for the timeline.

The instruction for the students is for them to respond on a blog. We will be modifying to either weekly or bi-weekly feedback to see where the students are according to the timeline. Furthermore, this option of feedback may be modified based on student performance.

  2. I like your website presentation. Very organized and easy to follow.
I would like to have seen the "Tasks" page more in your presentation.
Nice student sample of a brochure.
Great idea of differentiating the level of books... how do you assess the 6th graders' level of reading? DRA or DIBELS?
Nice peer tutoring with 6th and 3rd.
    Like the weekly blogs.

  3. I like how you have created a website that has everything that the students will need to complete the project.

Is there a checklist that your students go through so they know what step is next? Or are they just supposed to go through each tab on the website in order? Perhaps that is a rubric already on the site?

I like the math integration to research food allowance and trips. I really like glogster. That is an awesome resource and utilizes technology instead of just drawing paper/pencil posters.

  4. I love the advertise and campaign as a publisher!

How does advertising affect society? Is this a 6th grade standard?

Love that they are finding the cities to advertise in based on the population density as well as a line graph.

A lot of activities to get the assingment done. I like that they are able to stay organized using the WEBSITE to give examples.

NEat way to get a BOOK report done.

  5. Your choice of how to present is unique. I like that you showed what the students will see and use to complete the project. The students will really know what to do and what it should look like, since you planned so well.

  6. Putting it all on a website is a cool idea.

What an intense unit! It includes a lot of time and work.

Having the 6th graders work with the 3rd graders will be great.

  7. What great ideas!! I like the webquest that takes them through the entire process.
One idea would be for them to present their commercial via webcam with another school.

  8. Very well thought out and organized. I like that you put everything on a website. Did you have to pay for the website?

The standards are met and the project is very student centered. I like the variety of projects the students will be creating.

  10. I really like the use of the Web site for students. It keeps everything in one location and they can always work ahead or catch up without needing to bug the teacher.
The student samples also give the students a good idea of what is expected.
You have done an excellent job of differentiating to meet the needs of all students.
Good use of a variety of technology tools.
For next week - know who is "driving the laptop" and where they need to go when.
