Copyright laws and fair use

  1. I did not know that there was a time limit for public aired material. I will implement intellectual property by teaching about it and applying it as we begin our PBL.

  3. I learned that there is a fair use clause when I use copies of copyrighted works for teaching.
    I can implement ethical use of intellectual property in my classroom by not allowing my students to view recorded television shows after 10 days of airing, such as the presidential debate.

  4. I learned a lot of details about copyright while watching the Powerpoint. I found that part the most informative and useful. The cheat sheet of how much media can be used under fair use was interesting to me. That was new information to me. I can share this slide with students and post it in the room so that they can check their projects to make sure they have been ethical in their copyright useage. For 3rd grade I think that is appropriate because it is short and sweet and easy to understand. Plus, their projects are not that elaborate.

  5. I learned that there is a fair use clause for how much a teacher can take from the internet to use in the class room before it is considered plagiarism.
    I will be able to implement ethical use of resources from the internet when students focus on expository research.

  6. Lisa - I agree that it was interesting that events can only be shown for two years. Espcially in the events of presidental debates which only every four years but you might want to cover every year. How do we do that??

  7. One thing I learned about copyright that I did not know prior was how to cite sources is required. Teachers also need to check the Web site where they obtained the material to see if there are restrictions on using any of the materials.

    As for the ethical use of intellectual property in my classroom I will make sure the students are knowledgable about what and how they can use when getting information from the internet.

  8. 1) I have learned that everything created after March 1, 1989 is copyrighted even if it doesn't have a notice.

    2) One way I have implemented ethical use of intellectual property is in my 7th/8th grade classes. With their projects, we study a comprehensive copyright unit where we talk about appropriate instances to use information and go about the citation.

  9. 1. The one thing I learned is the time constraints on using something you tape to bring into your class. For example if I tape a news story from the nightly news, I can't save it to use every year in my class. It is illegal to use it beyond 10 days.

    2. I worked in a previous work situation that drilled this into us and did regular audits on our computers, so I already seek to apply ethical use of intellectual property in my classroom.

    2. We are going to have students look up weather in different areas in the world. We will make sure that they cite the website that they got their information from.

  11. I learned many things that were shocking, and many things that made me feel confident that what I do is acceptable. I thought it was strange that you could use materials for only two years, and then it's not right anymore. I thought that was strange.

    I will implement intellectual property ethically by following the regulations and teaching my students copyright rules. I will be sure to oversee what they post as well.

  12. I videotaped some Magic School Bus episodes off the TV a few years ago. I used them for over a year not knowing that I can only use them for one year. Ooops!
    Luckily, we can watch Magic School Bus on United Mainstreaming now.

    In my classroom, I'd like to post a chart of how to credit someone's work.

  14. I didn't realize that if we use copyrighted projects as an instructional resource for only two years. After this point, you must gain permission from the copyright author.

    I would make sure that students learn how to properly quote from author's on the websites, and how to site their web sources within there reports.

    2. I will teach my class about ethical uses and copyright issues in my class as we start the PBL and throughout our learning and current projects.

Prior to this copyright activity, I was not aware that largely fact-based material is not normally copyrighted whereas fair use does tend to apply more to material that voices opinions, thoughts, and ideas. I will make sure I have my students create works cited pages where they cite all resources used. It's my job to make sure they are aware of the difference between using someone else's work as a resource and copying it and claiming it as their own.

  17. 1. I learned more about the Fair Use Guidelines regarding photos and videos. Photos - 5 from one author; Videos/Music - 10% or 3 minutes.

    2. When students research weather, climate, and conditions on the internet, I will make sure they list Web addresses in the report.

  19. I did not realize that you could only use news media tapes for 10 days. I had planned on using the news info on Katrina in class and know now I cannot use it. I'll just have to stick with unitedstreaming.

  28. I find it very interesting that facts have no copyright and that material can only be used for so long. Then again after teaching grammar I keep learning that what I learned is not necessarily correct grammar now.

    I also thought having a time limit to use copyrighted materials was kind of strange.. there doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason for it. That's definitely something for all of us to keep in mind as we plan and eventually implement our PBLs.

    It seems that the two year thing makes it so we have to re-create our materials if we remain in the same grade for awhile... that doesn't seem fair! I suppose things are always changing, but it's an overwhelming thought as a teacher.
